[Beta] File browsing

Browse, organize, and manage files across Legora using the new file browser, designed to make navigating large document sets faster and more intuitive during review and analysis.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Overview

The File Browser makes it easier to navigate, organize, and manage documents across Legora. It provides a full‑screen, structured view of your files and folders so you can quickly find content, understand where documents live, and take action without leaving your workflow.

Use the File Browser when you need to:

  • Navigate large document sets or deep folder hierarchies

  • Organize files and folders more clearly

  • Find and act on documents quickly using sorting, filtering, or search

Availability (Beta): File browsing is initially available in the Portal and Organization Databases, with a wider rollout planned across the platform.

Navigating the File Browser

Opening the File Browser

You can open the full-screen File Browser from the left sidebar in Legora. Select Files to open a dedicated workspace for browsing and managing files and folders.

Understanding the layout

The File Browser is designed to be familiar and predictable:

  • A structured file and folder list for navigation

  • A clear folder hierarchy for moving between parent folders and subfolders

  • UI components consistent with the sidebar file picker

Navigating folders

  • Click a folder to open it and move deeper into the folder structure

  • Use the navigation path at the top of the File Browser to move back to parent folders or jump to any level in the folder hierarchy

  • Deep folder hierarchies are supported, with clear visual cues to help you stay oriented

Sorting, filtering, and search

Sorting files

You can sort files and folders to change how content is displayed, including by:

  • File name

  • Creator

  • Last modified date

Sorting helps surface the most relevant documents based on your task.

Filtering and search

  • Use filters to narrow which files and folders are shown

  • Search across folder and file names to quickly locate specific documents

These tools help reduce time spent scanning long lists or navigating deeply nested folders.

File operations

Opening files

You can open or use files directly from the file list:

  • Select a file to open it for viewing

  • Hover over a file or select it, then open the file menu () to choose how you want to use the file:

    • Open to view the file

    • Add to Assistant to attach the file to an Assistant chat

    • Add to Tabular Review to include the file in a review

  • Files open or are added to the selected context while remaining available in the File Browser

This allows you to move seamlessly between browsing files and working with them in the Assistant or Tabular Review.

Renaming files

  • Hover over a file

  • Open the file menu () and select Rename

  • Enter a new name and confirm by pressing Enter or clicking outside the name field

Moving files

  • Drag and drop files or folders into another folder

  • Use multi‑select to move several items at once

  • Moves take effect immediately and preserve the folder structure

Deleting files

  • Open the file menu () or select a file, then choose Delete to remove a file or folder

  • Bulk delete is supported using multi‑select

Folder management

Creating folders

You can create folders directly where you are working:

  • Select New folder in the top-right corner

  • Choose a name and a color for easier visual organization

Organizing folders

  • Create subfolders to group related documents

  • Move folders to reorganize structures as projects evolve

  • Folder structures are preserved and visible wherever the File Browser is supported

Multi‑select and bulk actions

The File Browser supports working with multiple items at once:

  • Select multiple files or folders using standard selection controls (click, Shift-click, or multi-select)

  • Apply bulk actions such as move or delete

This is especially useful when reorganizing large document sets.

Keyboard shortcuts and menus

To work faster, the File Browser supports:

  • Keyboard shortcuts for common actions

  • Right‑click context menus for quick access to file and folder operations

  • Drag‑and‑drop interactions alongside menu actions

  • Use Shift-click to select a continuous range of files or folders

These options let you choose the interaction style that best fits your workflow.

Integration with other Legora features

The File Browser is designed to work seamlessly with other parts of Legora:

  • Add files to the Assistant directly from the browser

  • Select files for use in Tabular Review

  • Browse and manage files stored in Organization Databases

  • Browse and work with files imported from integrations such as iManage, SharePoint, and NetDocuments

Files remain in a single system of record while being reusable across features.

Tips for organizing files

  • Use folders to group documents by project, deal, or purpose

  • Avoid overly deep hierarchies when possible to keep navigation simple

  • Apply consistent naming conventions so search and sorting are more effective

Current limitations and what’s coming

Current limitations (Beta):

  • DMS syncing, versioning, and new upload flows are out of scope for this phase

  • Initial availability is limited to the Portal and Organization Databases

  • Navigation in very deep folder hierarchies may still require refinement

The File Browser is in Beta, and additional functionality and refinements will be introduced over time.
